Permits
Permits are required for overnight stays in the backcountry. Reservations for backcountry campsites may be made in advance -- see www.nps.gov/glac/activities/bcguide1.htm. For information on permits for commercial photography and other special park uses call (406)888-7800.
Visitors Center and Programs
Visitor Center: There are 3 visitor centers located throughout the park, at Logan Pass, St. Mary, and Apgar. Park rangers at these visitor centers and at the Many Glacier Ranger Station are on duty throughout the summer to assist visitors. During the winter, information is available weekdays at park headquarters and on weekends at the Apgar Visitor Center.
Programs: Blackfeet, Salish, and Kootenai tribal members present special campfire talks on native life and culture at locations throughout the park. The St. Mary Visitor Center hosts weekly native dance troupes during July and August.
Food Supplies and Concessions
Food/Supplies: Groceries and gifts are available in Apgar and Many Glacier Valley. Food service is available at restaurants in Apgar, Lake McDonald, the Many Glacier Valley, and Rising Sun.
Concessions: The Glacier Natural History Association operates bookstores in the park visitor centers.
Visitor Impact
Never intentionally get close to a bear! Individual bears have their own personal space requirements which vary depending on their mood. Each will react differently and their behavior cant be predicted. All bears are dangerous and should be respected equally.
