Gros Morne National Park

Operating Hours
Open year-round.

Visitation
Highest in summer.

Permits
Registration and a fee of $10/night are mandatory for use of all backcountry campsites. A backcountry permit is required for hiking in the Long Range, obtainable at the visitor center.

Visitors Center and Programs
Visitor Centers: The Visitor Reception Centre near Rocky Harbour is open year-round, and offers exhibits on the geology and wildlife of the park, backpacking and ski trails guides, ski passes, and backcountry permits (Tel: 709-458-2066). Lobster Cove Head lighthouse offers detailed natural and cultural exhibits in the historic keepers' house, June-Sept. A new Discovery Centre opens in June of 2000, on the south side of Bonne Bay.

Programs: The park provides a diversity of summer programs, including campfire talks, guided hikes, and traditional local crafts demonstrations.

Food Supplies and Concessions
Food/Supplies: Food and supplies are available in the nearby communities of Cow Head, Rocky Harbour, Norris Point, Wiltondale, Woody Point, and Trout River.

Concessions: Bookstores at the visitor centre and entrance kiosk offer books, maps, and field guides, and are operated by the Gros Morne Co-operating Association.

Visitor Impact
Feeding of bears, foxes, and other wildlife is harmful to their health, puts them at risk of death by roadkill, and is prohibited by law. Drive slowly and carefully at night -- the moose are larger than your car.

Additional Information
The Long Range Mountains and Gros Morne Mountain are usually closed to hikers from early spring to late June. This is to minimize disturbance to animals breeding in these areas and allow sensitive soils to dry out.
