From L.A., drive north on I-5 to Hwy. 2, following it NE into the Forest. From Hwy. 2 you may access the Los Angeles River Ranger District area, the San Gabriel River Ranger District area, and a portion of the Santa Clara/Mojave Rivers Ranger District area. To the Santa Clara portion of the Santa Clara/Mojave Rivers Ranger District, continue north on I-5 past Newhall and Castaic.

From Fresno, drive south on Hwy. 99, south on I-5 until you reach the Forest just past Gorman. Driving further south on I-5 takes you to the 3 larger portions of the Forest via Hwy. 2.
