Elwha
Lowland forest, lowland river valley. Largest watershed in the park, historic cabins. Region has well maintained trails with moderate elevation trends. Historic homesteads and meadows; opportunities to view deer, elk and bear. Region includes Boulder Lake in the Northwest Elwha region. It is a subalpine lake basin. The river contains exotic trout. Fishing is allowed. A unique feature of this region is the Olympic Hot Springs.
Permit Information
Permits are required and can be obtained at the Elwha Ranger Station. Permits cost $5 to camp overnight in the wilderness (for groups up to 12 people), plus $2 per person per night. A quota system may be in effect; advance reservations required.
Directions
Follow Highway 101 west from Port Angeles to Olympic Hot Springs Road. Follow Hot Springs Road to trail head. Nearest Campground: Altaire/Elwha (5 miles from trail head)
Information Center
There is a year round station at Elwha off of Highway 101. There are summer stations at Heart O' the Hills, Elkhorn and Hayes River. There are also two visitor centers; one at Hurricane Ridge and one at Park Headquarters in Port Angeles.
