Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre, and Gunnison National Forest





Gunnison The Gunnison National Forest encompasses part of Colorado's central Rocky Mountains and includes two peaks over 14,000 feet, as well as 20 peaks over 13,000 feet in elevation. The La Garita, Collegiate Peaks, Fossil Ridge, Maroon Bells-Snowmass, Raggeds and West Elk Wildernesses are popular backcountry areas. One hundred and thrity miles of the Continental Divide National Scenic Trail corridor is on this Forest. Taylor Canyon provides opportunties for river fishing, rafting and camping in a canyon 20 miles long with walls up to 1,000 feet high. At the northeast end of the canyon, almost 30 miles from Gunnison, is Taylor Reservoir. Crested Butte Ski Area provides downhill skiing near the town of Crested Butte. Mountain biking also is popular in the Crested Butte area.
