Emerald Bay State Park

Located 22 miles south of Tahoe City, on the west shore of Lake Tahoe, Emerald Bay State Park offers some of the most striking scenery and sites of the region. Emerald Bay contains hiking trails, beach access, the Vikingsolm mansion, Fannette Island, Eagle Falls and an underwater park. The park offers guided tours of Vikingsholm, a 38-room replica of an 800 A.D. Scandanavian castle; Vikingsholm is one of the finest examples of Scandinavian architecture in the western hemisphere. Fannette Island is the only island to be found in all of Lake Tahoe; it is a sparsely timbered, brush covered upthrust of granite that rises 150 feet above the water. Visitors delight in Eagle Falls, a series of three successive waterfalls that cascade into Emerald Bay. Scuba divers may explore Emerald Bay State Underwater Park, the resting place for many boats, launches and barges used in the lake before the turn of the century, during the heyday of Emerald Bay Resort and used in the construction of Vikingsholm.
