Sam Houston National Forest

The Sam Houston National Forest is located where the pine forests of the southeastern US join the blackland prairies of central Texas. The result is a marvelous mix of eastern and western species of birds and other wildlife found nowhere else in the state. One of the major attractions in this forest is the Lone Star Hiking Trail. The trail and associated loops are approximately 128 miles long and open to foot travel only (no pack animals, motor vehicles or bicycles). The trail transects the entire Sam Houston National Forest from near Richards, Texas, in the west to near Cleveland, Texas, in the east.

Recommended Activities

  • Experience the Lone Star Hiking Trail; 128 miles only open to foot travellers. It covers the entire Sam Houston National Forest from Richards to Cleveland.
  • Be sure to stop by one of the Red-Cockaded Woodpecker Viewing Sites developed to describe the efforts made to save the endangered species.
