Golden Gate National Recreation Area ![]() The Golden Gate National Recreation Area encompasses 28 miles of the shorelines of San Francisco, Marin, and San Mateo Counties, including miles of ocean beaches, old-growth redwood forests, lagoons, marshes, historic military outposts, a lively cultural center at Fort Mason, Alcatraz Island, and sea lions. With a total area of 76,500 acres of land and water, it is the largest urban national park in the world and nearly two and a half times the size of the city of San Francisco. The San Francisco Presidio, the windswept bluffs of the Marin Headlands, the ancient redwoods of Muir Woods National Monument, and the prison of Alcatraz are all contained within the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.
Activities include strolling the beaches, exploring the numerous historic sites, observation of wildlife and birds, trail running, bicycling, kite flying, and more.
