Mount Diablo State Park ![]() On a clear day you can see almost forever from the 3,849-foot summit of Mount Diablo. This mountain stands alone, between the eastern edge of the San Francisco Bay Area and the western edge of California's Central Valley, with nothing whatsoever to block the view from its upper slopes. The panorama from the top of Mount Diablo is thought to be unsurpassed in extent by any other view in America, and when atmospheric conditions are good, visitors can see over 40,000 square miles in at least 35 of California's 58 counties. But a spectacular view is not the only thing Mount Diablo State Park has to offer, as this 18,000-acre natural area maintains an extensive network of hiking trails that lead through wildflowers, deep canyons, impressive rock formations, woodlands of live oak and bay laurel, and abundant wildlife including bobcats, mountain lions, badgers, golden eagles, feral pigs, and coyotes. Activities include rock climbing, mountain biking, wildflower photography, day hiking, tent camping at 3,000 feet elevation, and splendid stargazing.
