Virgin Islands National Park

Virgin Islands National Park encompasses three-fifths of the Caribbean island of St. John and nearly all of Hassel Island off nearby St. Thomas. Within its 9,620 acres of land and 5,600 acres of protected waters lie sheltered bays of crystalline waters teeming with coral reef life, white sand beaches shaded by coconut palms, and tropical forests with more than 800 species of plants.

Relics of pre-Colombian Amerindian civilization, remains of Danish colonial sugar plantations, and reminders of African slavery and the subsistence culture that followed emancipation are all part of the rich cultural history of the park and its island home.

The most frequently visited sites in Virgin Islands National Park include Trunk Bay, one of many beautiful beaches along the north shore of St. John, and the ruins of Annaberg Plantation, once a sugar factory that played an important role in the island's colonial and post-emancipation eras.
