Blue Hills Reservation

Blue Hills Reservation (5,800 acres) adjoins Fowl Meadow Reservation (894 acres) that together comprise the largest open space within 35 miles of Boston. This woodland reservation contains hundreds of different varieties of trees, shrubs and wildflowers that harbor a great diversity of wildlife, including many species that are rare or endangered in Massachusetts such as Timber Rattlesnake. The reservation boasts 20 hilltops that range in elevation from 295 feet to the 635 foot Great Blue Hill, the highest point along the Atlantic Coast, south of Maine. Trails provide ample opportunity for hiking, mounatin biking and horseback riding.

The reservation also contains more than 50 prehistoric sites, 16 historic structures listed in the National Register of Historic Places, 3 National Environmental Study Areas, and a National Historic Landmark - the Blue Hills Meteorological Observatory. The Trailside Museum houses excellent exhibits of the reservation's natural and cultural history and offers a variety of public programs. Play golf on the 36-hole course or downhill ski on Great Blue Hill.
