Allegheny National Forest ![]() Wilderness Areas within the Allegheny National Forest include Hickory Creek Wilderness and Allegheny Islands Wilderness. The Allegheny National Forest sits in the rugged plateau country of NW Pennsylvania. The Allegheny National Forest consists of over 513,000 acres; it is the only National Forest in PA. Many creeks and streams cut deeply into the plateau, creating a rolling and sometimes steep topography ranging from 1046 feet to 2263 feet above sea level. One of its many features is the 12,000 acre, 27 mile long Allegheny Reservoir. You'll find many recreation opportunities here. Several reservoirs and over 700 miles of streams offer outstanding fishing opportunities. Over 70 species of game and non-game fish are present throughout the Forest. More than 300 species of mammals, including snowshoe hare, red and gray fox, river otter, beaver, mink and muskrat as well as game species, such as the white-tailed deer, black bear and wild turkey provide excellent opportunity for hunting with a camera, gun, or bow. Hundreds of songbirds, hawks, great blue herons and owls enjoy the woodlands. Bald eagles have been spotted in the Kinzua Dam area.
