Black Hills National Forest

The Black Hills National Forest is located in western South Dakota and northeastern Wyoming,. A million-acre island of forested mountains in a vast sea of grass, it rises as much as 4,000 feet above the surrounding prairies. streams, and quiet glades. Vacationers have long come to the pine forests of the Black Hills to find relief and a place to rest after a long day of hiking, fishing, or trail riding. In winter, the canyons and plateaus of the northern Black Hills are traversed by first-class snowmobile and ski trails. The Forest Service manages the Black Hills National Forest for many uses in addition to recreation, including sustainable timber harvest and livestock grazing. This multiple-use management serves and sustains the land as well as the people who live and work on it.

Recommended Activities

  • Take a hike: The Forest offers visitors over 600 miles of trails for hiking, horse back riding, skiing and snowmobiling. Pick up a "yellow guide" at one of the Forest Offices which lists maps and describes all of the trails in the Black Hills area.
  • To see an abundance of wildlife take the Bear Mountain Trail, which gives you a chance to glimpse sharp-tailed grouse, ruffed grouse, wild turkeys, coyotes, or even an occasional mountain lion.
