Deschutes National Forest




Wilderness areas within the Deschutes National Forest include Mount Jefferson Wilderness, Mount Washington Wilderness, Three Sisters Wilderness, Diamond Peak Wilderness, and Mount Thielsen Wilderness.

Located in Central Oregon, the Deschutes National Forest extends for about 100 miles along the east side of the Cascade Mountains, encompassing more than 1.6 million acres. Enjoy a scenic backdrop of volcanic mountains that form the crest of the Cascade Mountains, alpine & evergreen forests, volcanic attractions, mountain lakes, caves, desert areas, and alpine meadows. A wide variety of recreational and scenic opportunities exist on the volcanoes of the High Cascades and in Newberry National Volcanic Monument.

Recommended Activities

  • Hike the Bridge Creek Trail in the West Bend-Fort Ranger District to escape into a land of alpine meadows.
  • Take the Big Obsidian Trail for a scenic exploration of the remains of this impressive lava flow.
  • Take the Big Marsh Nature Trail for panoramic views of Big Marsh and surrounding buttes.
  • Visit the Three Creek Lake Resort for some relaxing pristine water recreation.
