Sleeping Bag: Understanding Sleeping Bags

No one wants to be uncomfortably hot or cold when trying to sleep, especially after a long day of hiking on the trail. A sleeping bag should trap in warm air and at the same time allow perspriation to escape.Types and recommended uses.

Sleeping bags are primarily rated by season and degrees. A single-season sleeping bag defines a narrow temperature range for which it is appropriate. Single-season bags cover both extremes; there are summer bags and winter bags. A 2 or 3-season bag to covers a wider temperature range.

Most sleeping bags are given a temperature rating that defines the lowest temperature at which you'll sleep comfortably warm. Keep in mind that different manufacturers use different gagues, so it is difficult to compare across brands. Some people are "warm sleepers" or "cold sleepers." If you know which you are, adjust accordingly.Design Features

A variety of design features embellish some sleeping bags. While some features augment the bag's warmth, others do little more than increase look or convenience.

Use the drawstring to pull it snug around your neck and face. A pocket is a great place to store your watch or alarm clock. A footbox zipper allows you to ventilate your feet if they're too hot. Some bags may be zipped together.
