![]() Volunteer: Trails for the Birds
Hikers with a keen eye for birdwatching will have lots of new opportunities to enjoy their passion as states plan and complete new trails designed for birders. The Great Texas Coastal Birding Trail, launched in 1998, extends for 550 miles, features over 300 different sites for viewing particular species, and includes signs, boardwalks, and observation platforms. The state is currently building a $7 million interpretive center near McAllen to serve as the trail's centerpiece, and more than 100,000 free trail maps have already been distributed. Similar trail programs are planned for Florida and North Carolina.
The Virginia Coastal Birding Trail is planned for Cape Charles, a hotspot for many migratory species. The VA Department of Game and Inland Fisheries is holding planning meetings to generate interest in communities along the proposed trail, laying out possible routes using existing trails in the state park system, and developing maps, signage, and other promotional materials. The Department hopes to formally open the trail in a year or so and eventually set up a mid-Atlantic birding trail network. While offering interesting hikes, the birding trails also help counter sprawl, protect avian habitat and provide economic benefits through tourism.
