Reflecting on forty years of rafting makes us think how much has changed, and how much hasn't. Our first rafts were nothing more than surplus military pontoons and canned chili was the gustatory evening meal. We've gotten better in forty years! Enormous improvements in boats, training and equipment mean lighter loads, more flexibility, enhanced comfort and safety. Now we bolt through rapids we once avoided, dine on fresh salads, shrimp cocktails and Dutch oven feasts, and have more time to explore the ancient secrets of the canyons. But some important things haven't changed in four decades of rafting: The indescribable, astonishing beauty of America's rugged West still takes our breath away. The water's unbridled power amazes us, and the guides' yelling "rapids ahead" pumps the adrenaline. These emotions are as strong today as they were when pioneer river runner Jack Currey launched our first raft in 1959.
